Song Lyric: Underneath

We are who we are
So the world doesn’t see
What we feel deep inside
What is there underneath

Underneath the cover of sleep
Underneath the dreams of the deep
Underneath the layers of façade
Is a soul, a soul that I love
Now and forever
We touch underneath
We are who we are underneath

We pretend to be brave
We pretend to be strong
Act like everything’s fine
When inside we are torn

Underneath the cover of sleep
Underneath the dreams of the deep
Underneath the layers of façade
Is a soul, a soul that I love
Now and forever
We touch underneath
We are who we are underneath

Oh the world is so cruel
How can we ever be
What we are underneath
When everyone will only try
To bring us down

Underneath the cover of sleep
Underneath the dreams of the deep
Underneath the layers of façade
Is a soul, a soul that I love
Now and forever
We touch underneath
We are who we are underneath

Poem: Life's Surprises

Life is a roller coaster ride Oh it's so hard to abide
Life makes you run and hide
Sometimes it fills you with pride
Sometimes your wishes are denied
Sometimes it hurts you inside
It covers you like a tide
And makes you slip and slide

Doesn't forget to remind
The ups and downs that grind
Your intellectual mind
It's not that easy to find
The answers that put you behind
The rest of the human kind
Make you wish you could rewind
And make life's puzzle bind

Into one complete piece
So there's nothing to miss
And everything is bliss
Where there's no reason to diss
But only reason to kiss
Where there's nothing but peace
And unwanted anger and hatred is
The emotions that we dismiss

From this complicated world of ours
That is run by unequal powers
Where the precious minutes and hours
Don't seem to stretch like the towers
They change our life like mowers
That sometimes life just sours
Speeding too fast our eye glowers
And the confusing gray cloud hovers
Over our already crowded head
That is making us go mad
That is making us feel sad
Just want to remain in bed
Yet hoping that we'll be glad
If only it wouldn't so bad
If it would just be a tad
Easier for us to wade

In this huge universe
That sometimes brings a curse
Our way and of course
Makes this disease disperse
We are filled with remorse
Life just takes its course
Sometimes making it worse
Even flooding the shores

Life is so complicated
It can be overrated
Mixed feelings are generated
Like everything is slated
Unwanted emotions reinstated
From time to time we are concentrated
On life events that are dated
That somehow are related

In one way or another to us
All we seem to do is fuss
We are led to engage in cuss
Which in turn makes life thus
Unstable and undesirable plus
We believe that this bickering does
No psychological damage to us

Yet the truth is that we are wrong
This in no way makes us strong
And might take a bit too long
Because of this we may not get along
It's often referred to when we hear a song
It should ring a bell in us ding-dong
That we are doing something wrong
It might crush us like King Kong

This notion may not make sense
The meaning could be immense
And you might take a stance
You might prepare a defense
Break me out of my trance
Put me behind the fence
Perhaps leave it to chance
And not to ladies and gents
To determine the immense

Outcome of it all
Will it throw us ball?
Will this make us feel small?
Will this have a toll?
On us and make us fall
Make our opinions brawl
Divide us by an invisible wall
Or deeply hurt us at all

Is it all just a dream?
Are we blinded by the beam?
This whole thing makes it seem
As if life cannot gleam
It is just a stream
That makes positivity dim
And the chances are slim
For things to be perfect for her or him

I end on this notion
I am full of emotion
Life's full of commotion
It is as deep as the ocean
A never-ending motion
It goes through erosion
It's like a witches' potion
It's an unpredictable explosion

The story behind this poem:

One day a line came into my head: life is a roller coaster ride. This line brought to life a long rhyming poem. I didn't have to sit and think about what to write. The lines just came to me like a speeding bullet one after the other. I never expected something like this to happen but it did.

The poem above is exactly as it came to me back in 2003. Nothing has been edited. And that's what makes it powerful. The raw energy of each line and the piece as a whole is incredible. I hope you get something out of this poem and are affected by it in some way.

As far as classification goes perhaps this poem is more fitting to be called a rap or at least a freestyle rhyme. But in the end the content and its effect on readers is what really matters.

Poem: What the Mirror Always Says

Alone with a giant mirror,
Staring at her reflection,
She sees the truth others deny…

Her belly protrudes from her t-shirt
Like a ripened watermelon.
Her legs are heavy,
Making her skinny jeans rip at the seams.
Fat is hanging every which way,
From her legs, her arms, her face, her stomach,
From every inch of her undesired silhouette.

Nothing fits her deformed body.
Nothing feels right against her skin.
She wants to tear off her clothes
But it will only reveal what she yearns to hide.

She stands there frozen,
Staring at her reflection...
A loud voice escaping from the mirror,
“You’re a FAT, ugly freak!
No food must enter your body!
I will not let you live until you’ve lost it all!”

Tears spill from her face,
And she fills with rage,
Vowing never to let food in.
But even with her mouth shut,
Every time she looks at her reflection in the mirror,
All she hears is “you're a FAT, ugly freak!”
Even when her clothes sag like a rag,
And her jeans fall to the floor,
Even when there is nothing left of her but bones,
Even when she’s lost it all,
She is still a FAT, ugly freak, and always will be.
That’s what the mirror always says.

Song Lyric: Angel

I look out the window in search of you
Watch the falling leaves floating weightlessly
And the time like a turtle crawls slowly too
As I envision you walking here endlessly
You are here

You are an angel
Hanging above me
Gracing me with your essence
Day and night
You're my protector
Here beside me
Guarding my existence
So I am alright

The rose bouquet you have given me
Still hangs from a vase dried and withering
The petals are scattered like ashes here
And the memories I hear them whispering
He is here

You are an angel
Hanging above me
Gracing me with your essence
Day and night
You're my protector
Here beside me
Guarding my existence
So I am alright

All these things in my path that remind of you
Only give my heart yearning to join you
To give up my last breath so I'm close to you
So my soul that breaks can now link with you
I'll be there

I'll be your angel
Hanging above you
Gracing you with my essence
Day and night
I'll be your protector
Here beside you
Guarding your existence
So you are alright

And when our fates align
And I'll be there with you
We'll be angels together
We'll be linked here forever
As it was meant to be
Me and you

We'll be two angels
Hanging above them
Gracing them with our essence
Day and night
We'll be their protectors
Here beside them
Guarding their existence
So they are alright

Poem: Your Letters From the Sea

An ink stained paper
With words lost in time
Flew onto the window
Of my darkening life.

The words were your story
Of your journey through time,
Of your days on that vessel
Slipping by from my life.

A skiff on a giant,
You waved your good-bye,
Got lost in the ocean,
Hid away from my eye.

And the memory of you
In the waters of ink
Are the stains I swim through,
To feel you, to think.

Poem: Immune

You tell me how to think,
Tell me how to act,
Tell me how to dress;
You program me with your mind,
With your eyes,
With your voice.

You debug me inch by inch
Thinking I won’t crash,
But your test fails.
There is a bug inside me.
You can try to crack the code
But I cannot be fixed.

The bug is my willpower,
My inner strength
That fights against your brainwash,
And fully repels
Your preconceived image
Of the person I should be.

The vision you have is yours alone;
It is not mine nor will ever be.
I have eyes of my own,
Deep eyes that see through your plan
To turn me into something I am not
Nor ever intend to be.

You can program me to your liking,
But you’re better off directing your energy
Towards someone else,
Someone who is not immune to your virus,
A robot that will follow every command
You code into his brain.

I cannot be automated,
I cannot be altered
Or rewired by anyone.
The only one who can transform me is me;
I will only do it to my own benefit,
Not the benefit of others.

I have programmed my mind
To crash your code,
To reroute your flow chart
Elsewhere but in my direction.
So go into shut down mode
And find another pc to infect.

Song Lyric: Frozen

She is standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
And her mouth will not open
What to do she is unsure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
But she just cannot go through it
Until her fear’s overcome

She’s been working at this job for a while
And every day she finds no reason to smile
Deep inside she knows she has to go
But how that will happen she really don’t know

She is standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
And her mouth will not open
What to do she is unsure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
But she just cannot go through it
Until her fear’s overcome

Every time she tells herself this is it
The time has come and I’m ready to quit
I’ve had enough of these suffering days
The time has come for me to be on my way

She is standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
And her mouth will not open
What to do she is unsure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
But she just cannot go through it
Until her fear’s overcome

All she’s gotta do is tell them she quits
It should be easy but it tears her to bits
She almost does it but then stops in her tracks
And every time she’s an emotional wreck

She is standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
And her mouth will not open
What to do she is unsure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
But she just cannot go through it
Until her fear’s overcome

She wants to go without saying a word
That’s so much easier for her it’s absurd
They will not bite her and they won’t put her down
Yet she can’t bring herself to change things around

She is standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
And her mouth will not open
What to do she is unsure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
But she just cannot go through it
Until her fear’s overcome
Until her fear is overcome

She will be stuck here and in vain
She has to find someway somehow
To get the courage and to say
I won’t be working here no more
It’s time to leave this place behind
It’s time to walk through other doors
And make my life a better kind

When she’s standing in the hallway
Shaking frozen to the floor
Will her mouth ever open
What to do will she be sure
Yeah she knows she’s gotta do it
Yeah she knows her time has come
So will she ever go through it
Will her fear overcome

When her life has turned around
And we’ll find her some place else
That’s when we will know about
The scared girl who’s changed her ways
